The Road to Success: My Academic Experience
St Augustine Girls’ High School: Laying the Foundation
My journey into physiotherapy began with a simple belief: everyone deserves to live a healthy, fulfilling life. At St. Augustine’s Girls’ High School, I first learned the value of hard work and perseverance through the school’s inspiring motto, “Per Ardua Ad Astra,” meaning “Through Hard Work We Reach the Stars.” This guiding principle not only shaped my educational experience but also laid the groundwork for my future career.
The foundational skills I developed during my time at SAGHS ignited my passion for research and evidence-based therapy. I realized that true progress is not just about reaching a destination; it’s a journey filled with challenges that can be overcome with dedication. I aim to instill this mindset in my clients, encouraging them to embrace the effort needed to achieve their health and wellness goals. Together, we navigate the ups and downs of this journey, celebrating each milestone along the way.
UWI Mona: Expanding Horizons
My time at UWI Mona was truly eye-opening. Living in Jamaica and diving into the world of Physical Therapy introduced me to a whole new community. I had the chance to work alongside colleagues from all kinds of Caribbean cultures, each bringing their unique experiences to the table. This not only helped me grow as a person but also deepened my appreciation for the different challenges and strengths we all have.
This experience opened my eyes to the diverse backgrounds and unique challenges individuals face, teaching me that understanding these differences is key to providing better care. I carry this lesson with me in my practice every day.
Internship and Beyond
My internships at both a public hospital and a private clinic were pivotal in shaping my understanding of physiotherapy in practice. These hands-on experiences allowed me to apply what I had learned in the classroom to real-life situations, working directly with patients from diverse backgrounds and a variety of needs. I encountered challenges that tested my skills and deepened my compassion, reinforcing my commitment to this field.
The pandemic brought about significant changes in healthcare, pushing me to embrace telehealth as a vital part of my practice. This shift opened up new opportunities to connect with clients and provide care in a more accessible way. By leveraging technology, I can reach individuals who may not have access to traditional therapy settings, ensuring that everyone has the chance to pursue their wellness goals, no matter their circumstances.
